Design Engineer – Custom Skids and Tanks

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level Design Engineer – Custom Skids and Tanks is responsible for designing complex modular skid systems and stainless-steel tanks used in process industries such as pharmaceutical, food and beverage, chemical, and biotech. This role focuses on developing 3D models, detailed fabrication drawings, and engineering documentation while ensuring the final design meets customer specifications, fabrication feasibility, and regulatory standards.

This position involves direct collaboration with project managers, fabrication teams, quality assurance, and customers to deliver accurate and cost-effective engineered systems.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Design and Engineering of Modular Skids and Pressure/Storage Tanks

  2. Mechanical Calculations and Equipment Layout Optimization

  3. Fabrication Drawing and BOM Development

  4. Regulatory and Standards Compliance (ASME, B31.3, 3-A, GMP)

  5. Cross-Functional and Customer-Facing Collaboration

Key Responsibilities:

1. System and Component Design

  • Design skid-mounted systems, tanks, frames, and piping layouts using 3D CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD Plant 3D).

  • Ensure proper equipment placement, pipe routing, support design, and overall system accessibility.

  • Incorporate valves, pumps, instruments, and sanitary components into design packages.

2. Engineering Calculations and Design Validation

  • Perform engineering calculations for tank sizing, pressure/temperature ratings, wall thickness, nozzle reinforcements, and material selection.

  • Validate design based on process, mechanical, and thermal loading requirements.

  • Participate in design reviews, risk assessments (e.g., FMEA), and HAZOP meetings as required.

3. Drawing and Documentation Development

  • Create and manage fabrication drawings, P&IDs, piping isometrics, and general arrangements.

  • Generate complete bill of materials (BOM), weld maps, and support documentation packages.

  • Ensure revision control and alignment with project scope.

4. Compliance and Standards Adherence

  • Design in accordance with ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII, 3-A Sanitary Standards, BPE, and GMP requirements.

  • Implement sanitary design principles for clean-in-place (CIP/SIP) compatibility.

  • Support documentation and validation for regulatory audits or customer compliance.

5. Project and Team Collaboration

  • Interface with project managers, fabrication supervisors, QA/QC, and procurement to support build feasibility and project timelines.

  • Address fabrication and installation issues through design modifications or field support.

  • Communicate with customers regarding technical details, approvals, and clarifications.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • 3–6 years of relevant experience in equipment or process skid design.

  • Proficient in CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD).

  • Understanding of welded assemblies, pressure vessels, and sanitary equipment.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with hygienic design for food, dairy, or pharmaceutical systems.

  • Familiarity with ERP integration for BOM generation.

  • Strong mechanical calculation and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines under pressure.
