Job Title: Controls Technician – HVAC Sensors/Actuators

 Summary:

The Senior Controls Technician leads advanced diagnostics, installation, calibration, and maintenance of HVAC control systems with a specialization in sensors, actuators, and interface components. Operating with high autonomy, this role ensures optimal performance and integration of HVAC control devices within Building Automation Systems (BAS). The technician also mentors junior staff, collaborates with engineering teams, and supports commissioning for high-complexity facilities such as manufacturing plants, data centers, or healthcare environments.

Key Responsibilities:

Advanced Field Work & System Integration

  • Lead installation, testing, and commissioning of complex sensor-actuator networks in HVAC systems.

  • Ensure proper selection, wiring, and programming of field devices to meet functional specifications.

  • Integrate controls with BAS/DDC systems using protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, and LonWorks.

Diagnostics, Calibration & Troubleshooting

  • Perform high-level diagnostics of HVAC control system failures, including sensor drift, signal losses, and actuator lag.

  • Calibrate multi-point and smart sensors (temperature, pressure, flow, occupancy) to precision tolerances.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve system integration issues involving PLCs, controllers, and control loops.

Leadership & Mentoring

  • Provide technical leadership and on-the-job training to junior and mid-level controls technicians.

  • Assist engineers in developing control strategies, logic diagrams, and sequence of operations.

  • Support commissioning agents and facility operators during HVAC system acceptance and handoff.

Compliance, Safety & Documentation

  • Ensure all installations meet NEC, ASHRAE, UL, and local code compliance.

  • Maintain detailed records including device configurations, calibration data, and loop check reports.

  • Champion safety protocols and lead risk assessments for controls-related field work.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Expert-level field service and control device management

  • High-accuracy calibration and fault diagnostics

  • BAS integration, logic verification, and commissioning support

  • Mentorship and technical leadership across controls team

  • Code compliance, safety, and project documentation

Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or GED (required)

  • Associate degree or technical certification in HVAC controls, mechatronics, or industrial automation (preferred)

Experience:

  • 6+ years of experience in HVAC controls with hands-on expertise in sensor and actuator systems

  • Experience leading installation or commissioning projects in BAS environments

Skills & Competencies:

  • Advanced understanding of HVAC systems, control logic, and automation sequences

  • Proficient in low-voltage wiring, control panel layouts, and field device configuration

  • Skilled with multimeters, loop calibrators, signal simulators, and protocol analyzers

  • Strong leadership, mentorship, and cross-disciplinary communication abilities

  • Detailed knowledge of safety standards and building code compliance
