Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

Job Title: Control Systems Engineer – HVAC & BMS

Job Summary:

We are seeking a seasoned and strategic Senior Control Systems Engineer to lead the operation, optimization, and advancement of HVAC and Building Management Systems (BMS) in a power plant setting. This role demands deep technical expertise in control systems, proven leadership in system integration and commissioning, and the ability to align automation strategies with plant performance, energy efficiency, and sustainability goals.

Key Responsibilities

System Leadership & Strategy

  • Oversee full lifecycle of HVAC and BMS projects—from design and integration to commissioning, tuning, and optimization.

  • Lead development of control strategies for complex HVAC systems, including sequencing, load management, and fault diagnostics.

  • Set standards and best practices for BMS configuration, documentation, and cyber-physical system integration.

Control Optimization & Technical Oversight

  • Design and implement advanced control algorithms (e.g., demand-based ventilation, chilled water reset, night purge strategies).

  • Evaluate system data to drive performance improvements, minimize downtime, and reduce energy consumption.

  • Optimize PID loops, operational schedules, and control logic across plant-wide HVAC systems.

Integration & Digitalization Initiatives

  • Lead integration of HVAC systems with enterprise-level energy management and SCADA platforms.

  • Manage communication architecture using BACnet, Modbus, OPC UA, or proprietary protocols.

  • Support digital twin development, smart plant initiatives, and advanced analytics platforms for predictive maintenance.

Instrumentation, Commissioning & QA/QC

  • Direct installation, calibration, and verification of field devices (sensors, actuators, VFDs, controllers).

  • Lead functional testing, FAT/SAT, loop checks, and control commissioning activities.

  • Ensure QA/QC standards are met in system installation and performance verification.

Team Leadership & Capacity Building

  • Supervise junior engineers, technicians, and external contractors.

  • Develop training materials and lead internal workshops on control systems, energy automation, and BMS upgrades.

  • Act as a technical liaison between engineering, maintenance, IT, and external vendors.

Compliance & Documentation

  • Ensure compliance with standards such as ASHRAE Guideline 36, ISO 50001, and relevant cybersecurity policies.

  • Prepare high-quality control diagrams, I/O matrices, network topologies, and system operation documentation.

  • Lead audit preparations and reporting for internal reviews or third-party certifications.

Key Focus Areas

  • Lead HVAC control systems strategy and performance optimization

  • Manage BMS projects from concept through implementation

  • Ensure robust integration with SCADA, EMS, and plant-level automation

  • Develop teams and promote controls engineering best practices

  • Align system performance with energy and sustainability goals

Qualifications and Skills

Education:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, Instrumentation, Mechatronics, or related field

Certifications (Required or Strongly Preferred):

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM), Certified Measurement & Verification Professional (CMVP), or BMS manufacturer certifications (Niagara N4, Siemens Desigo, Johnson Controls Metasys, etc.)

  • Familiarity with ISA, IEC 61131, ASHRAE, ISO 50001

Experience:

  • 5+ years of experience in HVAC control systems and BMS in industrial or power plant settings

  • Track record of managing multi-disciplinary control systems projects and teams

  • Strong background in control logic design, system integration, and performance optimization

Skills:

  • Expert-level knowledge of HVAC automation, energy management, and building control systems

  • Proficient in SCADA, PLCs (Siemens, Schneider, Allen-Bradley), and communication protocols (BACnet, Modbus, OPC)

  • Advanced skills in data analysis, control visualization, and automation diagnostics

  • Strong leadership, project management, and stakeholder communication skills
