Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Junior Controls Engineer supports the design, configuration, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of control systems for gas and steam turbines. This role focuses on PLC/DCS/SCADA systems, particularly GE Mark VIe, and involves working under senior engineers to ensure control logic integrity, safe operation, and system reliability for turbine-driven processes.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Controls Configuration & Programming

  • Assist in the development and testing of turbine control logic and HMI interfaces using GE Mark VIe, PLCs (Siemens, Allen-Bradley), and DCS platforms.

  • Participate in modifying and troubleshooting control logic, sequencing, and interlocks.

2. System Integration & Commissioning

  • Support integration of turbine control systems with auxiliary packages (fuel, lube oil, seal gas, etc.) and plant DCS/SCADA networks.

  • Assist in on-site commissioning, loop checking, I/O verification, and system start-up.

3. Alarm & Trip Logic Review

  • Support analysis of turbine trip logs, alarms, and event histories to identify abnormal behaviors.

  • Assist in the documentation and updating of logic diagrams and control sequences.

4. Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Help diagnose issues in turbine control systems, instrumentation, or field devices under supervision.

  • Participate in preventive maintenance and firmware/software updates.

5. Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare and update system drawings, I/O lists, control schematics, cause-and-effect diagrams, and functional descriptions.

  • Document changes, updates, and support tickets related to control logic and HMI configurations.

6. Training & Development

  • Participate in OEM and internal training programs on Mark VIe, PLC programming, instrumentation, and safety systems.

  • Stay updated with best practices in industrial automation and turbomachinery control systems.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Control Platforms: GE Mark VIe, Siemens S7, Rockwell (Allen-Bradley), ABB DCS, Emerson DeltaV.

  • Programming Tools: ToolboxST, RSLogix, TIA Portal, Step 7, SCADA/HMI software (Cimplicity, WinCC, Wonderware).

  • Systems: Gas turbines, steam turbines, driven compressors/generators, auxiliary systems.

  • Field Devices: Transmitters, actuators, solenoid valves, thermocouples, vibration sensors.

  • Standards & Safety: IEC 61508/61511, NFPA 85, SIL classification, LOPA/SIS (optional exposure).

  • Documentation: Wiring diagrams, I/O mapping, logic narratives, control loop documents.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, or Mechatronics Engineering.

  • Experience: 0–3 years in a controls engineering or automation role (internships/co-ops counted).

  • Desirable Skills:

    • Basic knowledge of turbine operating principles.

    • Familiarity with control loop tuning and PID basics.

    • Exposure to Mark VIe ToolboxST or similar tools is a strong plus.

    • Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills.

  • Certifications (Preferred): GE Mark VIe training, Siemens PLC basics, ISA/IEC instrumentation basics.
