The Mid-Level Controls Engineer designs, programs, and commissions Building Automation Systems (BAS) and Building Management Systems (BMS) to optimize HVAC operations and energy efficiency. This role independently develops control strategies, performs system integration, and leads troubleshooting efforts. The engineer collaborates with mechanical, electrical, and IT teams to ensure seamless automation and regulatory compliance in commercial or industrial HVAC environments.
Develop and implement advanced control sequences for HVAC systems including air handling units, chillers, boilers, VAVs, pumps, and energy management systems.
Configure and program BAS/BMS platforms (e.g., Tridium Niagara, Johnson Controls Metasys, Siemens Desigo) ensuring interoperability and reliability.
Integrate field devices such as sensors, actuators, controllers, and communication protocols (BACnet, Modbus, LonWorks).
Lead commissioning activities including system startup, functional testing, debugging, and performance tuning.
Diagnose and resolve BAS/BMS issues, optimizing control logic to improve system performance and energy savings.
Collaborate with field technicians and vendors during installation and maintenance.
Prepare detailed control narratives, sequence of operations, wiring diagrams, and project documentation.
Maintain software libraries and version control for control programs and configuration files.
Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and client requirements.
Work cross-functionally with engineering, operations, and IT teams to align controls with building management goals.
Mentor junior controls engineers and technicians.
Stay current on new BAS/BMS technologies, cyber-security practices, and automation trends.

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or related field (required)
3–6 years of hands-on experience in HVAC controls design, programming, and commissioning
Proven expertise with BAS/BMS platforms and field device integration
Proficient in BAS/BMS systems such as Niagara, Metasys, Siemens Desigo, or equivalent
Experience programming using ladder logic, BACnet, Modbus, or similar protocols
Familiar with PLC programming, SCADA systems, and HMI configuration
Strong skills in Microsoft Office and project documentation tools
Solid understanding of HVAC systems and control theory
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
Ability to manage multiple projects and lead commissioning efforts
Leadership skills to mentor junior staff and coordinate with vendors
