The Senior Compliance Engineer – NFPA/OSHA/ASME Steam Safety leads regulatory compliance, safety auditing, and risk mitigation strategies related to steam generation, distribution systems, and pressure equipment. This role ensures all steam and boiler systems comply with applicable national codes (NFPA 85, OSHA 1910, ASME Section I & VIII), local regulations, and internal safety standards. The position serves as a subject matter expert (SME) in steam-related compliance, leads audit preparedness, and partners with cross-functional teams to implement sustainable safety and compliance solutions.
Interpret and apply compliance standards for steam systems, including:
NFPA 85 – Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazards Code
ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code (Sections I, IV, VIII)
OSHA 1910 – Process Safety, Lockout/Tagout, PPE, and Pressure Systems
Serve as lead auditor and technical liaison during inspections by OSHA, state regulators, and insurance agencies.
Oversee periodic internal audits and compliance assessments of:
Safety relief valves
Pressure vessels and steam headers
Combustion and interlock safety controls
Flame safeguard and burner management systems
Manage 3rd party inspectors and certification vendors for high-pressure systems.
Maintain comprehensive compliance documentation, including:
Inspection logs, test results, and corrective action reports
Engineering calculations and pressure safety valve sizing records
Boiler logbooks, audit responses, and procedural documentation
Develop KPIs to track system risk levels, compliance health, and test completion rates.
Lead risk assessments (e.g., HAZOP, PHA, RBI) for steam and pressure systems.
Investigate compliance-related incidents, identify root causes, and recommend corrective/preventive actions (CAPA).
Collaborate with engineering teams to implement control changes or design modifications to mitigate hazards.
Develop compliance policies, training materials, and SOPs related to boiler and steam safety.
Deliver training sessions on NFPA, OSHA, and ASME code awareness, steam hazards, and emergency protocols.
Ensure plant teams are trained in lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, and pressure system hazards.
Provide compliance oversight in capital projects involving boiler upgrades, steam trap replacements, or utility expansions.
Ensure new designs, equipment specs, and commissioning procedures meet applicable safety and code requirements.

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Chemical Engineering (Master’s preferred)

Deep knowledge of boiler/steam system components, operation, and safety requirements
Demonstrated experience in audits, incident investigations, and compliance system management
Certified Boiler Inspector (CBI) or ASME Inspector Certification
OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification
Certified Process Safety Professional (CPSP) or equivalent
Valid State Boiler Engineer License (if required by jurisdiction)
First Aid/CPR, Lockout/Tagout, and Confined Space Entry certifications
Expert understanding of NFPA, OSHA, and ASME codes
Strong leadership in audits, documentation, and compliance enforcement
Skilled in interpreting technical diagrams, pressure vessel drawings, and control logic
Advanced troubleshooting of safety and control systems
Excellent communication, report writing, and cross-functional leadership
