The Mid-Level Compliance Engineer – NFPA/OSHA/ASME Steam Safety is responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance and operational safety of steam, boiler, and pressure systems. This role supports compliance programs related to NFPA 85, OSHA 1910 (including PSM, LOTO, PPE), and the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, focusing on system safety assessments, documentation, audit support, and corrective action implementation. The engineer also collaborates cross-functionally with operations, maintenance, and environmental health and safety (EH&S) teams to sustain a compliant and reliable plant utility infrastructure.
Ensure adherence to applicable codes including:
NFPA 85 – Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazards Code
OSHA 1910 – Process Safety Management, Lockout/Tagout, PPE
ASME Section I & VIII – Power Boilers and Pressure Vessels
Conduct risk assessments and gap analyses for steam safety systems and pressure vessels.
Schedule and verify compliance inspections for:
Safety relief valves
Flame safeguard and burner management systems
Pressure vessels and boilers
Control interlocks and emergency shutdown systems
Maintain detailed documentation and testing logs for all compliance-critical equipment.
Support internal and external audits (e.g., insurance inspections, OSHA visits).
Coordinate pre-audit preparations and post-audit follow-ups including CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Actions).
Track and report compliance KPIs and non-conformance trends.
Develop and maintain technical documentation including compliance manuals, inspection schedules, SOPs, and equipment certification records.
Review and revise P&IDs and system diagrams for compliance updates.
Verify that all required operator licenses, certifications, and training records are up-to-date.
Work closely with:
Operations teams for safe SOP implementation
Maintenance teams for scheduled testing and service
EH&S teams for policy alignment and hazard assessments
Participate in hazard reviews (PHA, HAZOP) for steam systems and utilities.
Deliver toolbox talks and training sessions on compliance topics (e.g., LOTO, pressure safety, PPE).
Support emergency response readiness, including testing of ESD systems and documentation of drills.
Steam system safety and code compliance

OSHA/ASME/NFPA interpretation and application
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field
3–6 years of experience in engineering compliance, boiler operations, or utility safety systems
Proven knowledge of ASME Boiler Codes, OSHA regulations (1910 series), and NFPA 85 standards
Familiarity with pressure vessel certifications, control system interlocks, and flame safety
OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification
Certified Boiler Inspector (CBI) or equivalent (preferred)
Certified Process Safety Professional (optional)
Lockout/Tagout and Confined Space certifications
First Aid/CPR certified
Technical writing and documentation accuracy
Strong understanding of steam safety systems and process controls
Excellent audit preparation and communication skills
Proficient in CMMS, Excel, AutoCAD (P&ID updates), and compliance software
Ability to work across engineering, maintenance, and safety disciplines
