The Junior Compliance Engineer – NFPA/OSHA/ASME Steam Safety supports the implementation, documentation, and enforcement of regulatory safety standards for steam and pressure systems. This entry-level role involves assisting in safety inspections, regulatory documentation, system evaluations, and supporting engineering teams in aligning boiler and steam operations with national standards such as NFPA 85, OSHA 1910, and the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code.
The position provides foundational exposure to process safety compliance within complex mechanical systems, including boilers, pressure vessels, steam distribution, and emergency control systems.
Assist in reviewing engineering practices and procedures for compliance with NFPA, OSHA, ASME, and local regulatory requirements.
Maintain up-to-date documentation of inspections, test reports, compliance checklists, and audit responses.
Help compile regulatory data for internal reviews, audits, and external inspections.
Participate in steam system walkthroughs and boiler plant inspections with senior compliance engineers.
Help verify the proper function and inspection dates of safety relief valves, flame safeguard systems, and pressure controls.
Record field observations and assist in reporting non-compliance issues.
Support the tracking of compliance deadlines related to valve testing, pressure vessel certifications, and operator license renewals.
Help monitor the implementation status of corrective actions and ensure closure of open compliance findings.
Work with utilities, operations, and EH&S teams to gather compliance data and verify standard operating procedures are up-to-date.
Assist in updating piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs) with compliance-related revisions.
Support pre-inspection preparation efforts and post-inspection action tracking.
Participate in training programs focused on:
NFPA 85 (Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazards Code)
ASME Section I and Section VIII standards
OSHA regulations (especially 1910.119 - PSM and 1910.147 - Lockout/Tagout)
Build familiarity with steam system design, pressure safety devices, and combustion control principles.
Steam safety compliance documentation
Pressure relief device tracking and verification
NFPA/OSHA/ASME awareness and research
Boiler safety valve and shutdown system support
Audit preparation and safety walkthroughs
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Process Safety, or related technical discipline
0–2 years of experience in plant operations, compliance, or utilities support (internships acceptable)
Basic understanding of steam systems and pressure equipment
Familiarity with engineering codes (e.g., ASME, NFPA, OSHA) is preferred
OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour General Industry Certification
Entry-level Process Safety Management (PSM) training
Lockout/Tagout, Confined Space Entry awareness
First Aid/CPR Certification
Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
Basic technical understanding of mechanical systems and controls
Eagerness to learn safety codes and compliance protocols
Excellent written and verbal communication
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and basic CAD/P&ID review
