Chief Mechanical Officer – Generation Division

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Chief Mechanical Officer – Generation Division is responsible for leading and overseeing all mechanical engineering, maintenance, and asset management functions across power generation facilities. This executive role ensures the reliability, safety, and performance of mechanical assets—such as turbines, boilers, pumps, compressors, and heat exchangers—while aligning mechanical operations with strategic generation targets and regulatory compliance.

The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise, visionary leadership, and operational excellence to drive sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective mechanical operations in thermal, hydro, or combined-cycle generation assets.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the strategic direction, planning, and execution of all mechanical engineering and maintenance activities in the generation division.

  • Ensure optimum performance of generation-critical mechanical systems such as turbines, condensers, pumps, piping networks, and associated rotating/static equipment.

  • Define and implement comprehensive maintenance strategies (preventive, predictive, and condition-based) across generation assets.

  • Develop asset life cycle management plans, reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), and root cause failure analyses (RCFA).

  • Provide technical oversight for mechanical designs, upgrades, overhauls, and long-term service agreements with OEMs.

  • Collaborate with operations, electrical, instrumentation, and HSE departments to optimize plant availability and thermal efficiency.

  • Manage annual mechanical maintenance budgets, CAPEX plans, and procurement strategies.

  • Lead emergency response protocols, shutdown planning, and restart procedures for major mechanical failures or outages.

  • Stay abreast of technological advancements in power plant machinery and drive innovation in mechanical systems and digital diagnostics.

  • Represent the mechanical function in executive meetings, board reviews, external audits, and regulatory inspections.

  • Build and develop high-performing mechanical engineering and maintenance teams through succession planning, training, and talent acquisition.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Asset Reliability & Efficiency

    • Maximize plant availability and generation efficiency through robust mechanical reliability and condition-monitoring systems.

  2. Mechanical Engineering Excellence

    • Provide expert guidance and approval for critical mechanical designs, specifications, and modifications.

  3. Strategic Maintenance Leadership

    • Align mechanical O&M strategy with long-term generation goals and energy transition plans.

  4. Crisis Management & Failure Response

    • Lead investigations, repairs, and recovery actions following major mechanical incidents or forced outages.

  5. Leadership & Organizational Development

    • Mentor senior mechanical engineers and plant maintenance leads, and drive a culture of performance and accountability.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering; Master’s degree (M.Tech, MBA, or related) preferred.

  • 20+ years of experience in power generation (thermal, hydro, or combined-cycle), with at least 5 years in executive or senior leadership roles.

  • Extensive knowledge of turbines, boilers, heat exchangers, balance-of-plant (BoP) systems, piping, and pressure vessels.

  • Proven experience in managing large mechanical teams across multi-site or grid-scale generation operations.

  • Strong grasp of mechanical codes and standards (ASME, API, ISO, NFPA).

  • Experience with asset management frameworks, CMMS (SAP PM, Maximo), and digital reliability tools (IIoT, vibration analysis, thermography).

  • Exceptional leadership, negotiation, and communication skills, with the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or equivalent

  • Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP)

  • Project Management Professional (PMP)

  • NEBOSH or equivalent HSE certification (advantageous)

Work Environment:

  • Executive office setting with regular travel to power generation sites, OEMs, and regulatory bodies.

  • May require emergency visits to plants during unplanned outages or major projects.
