Chief Mechanical Engineer – Marine Platforms

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a visionary and technically accomplished Chief Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, integration, and technical oversight of mechanical systems for marine platforms, including propulsion, HVAC, piping, fluid systems, and auxiliary machinery. This senior leadership role requires a balance of deep engineering expertise, strategic planning, and cross-functional coordination to drive innovation and ensure the successful delivery of high-performance, compliant marine vessels and systems.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead the overall mechanical engineering strategy, architecture, and technical design for marine vessels (naval, commercial, or offshore platforms).

    • Oversee mechanical system integration across propulsion, shafting, fuel, lubrication, HVAC, bilge, ballast, fire protection, and auxiliary systems.

    • Ensure all mechanical designs meet performance, safety, and reliability requirements, while complying with classification society and customer specifications (e.g., ABS, DNV, USCG, MIL-SPEC).

    • Provide leadership and mentorship to a team of mechanical engineers, designers, and analysts; establish technical standards and review processes.

    • Drive system-level trade studies, component selection, material evaluation, and performance modeling.

    • Collaborate closely with naval architects, electrical engineers, and shipyard partners to support vessel layout, machinery space design, and modular integration.

    • Support proposal development, cost estimation, and technical presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

    • Lead design reviews, risk assessments, failure investigations, and engineering change management processes.

    • Ensure alignment between engineering activities and program milestones, budget constraints, and regulatory timelines.

    • Foster a culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence within the organization.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Marine Mechanical System Architecture

    • Lead the end-to-end design of propulsion, power, HVAC, and fluid systems for complex marine vessels.

  2. Compliance & Classification

    • Ensure systems conform to relevant standards such as IMO, SOLAS, ABS, DNV, USCG, or military specifications.

  3. Technical Leadership & Team Development

    • Mentor engineering teams, establish best practices, and ensure technical accuracy and consistency across projects.

  4. Cross-Functional Integration

    • Collaborate across disciplines to support vessel configuration, weight control, machinery alignment, and performance optimization.

  5. Innovation & Risk Management

    • Champion new technologies, materials, and design methods while proactively identifying and mitigating technical risks.

Qualifications & Skills:

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Marine Engineering; Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.

    • 12+ years of experience in mechanical design and integration for marine platforms (defense, commercial, or offshore).

    • Proven expertise in marine propulsion systems (diesel, gas turbine, electric), HVAC, piping layouts, and rotating machinery.

    • Strong understanding of shipboard systems integration, modular installation practices, and shipyard production constraints.

    • Experience with CAD/CAE tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, AVEVA, Siemens NX, ANSYS) and system modeling software.

    • Familiarity with classification society rules (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s, etc.) and international maritime regulations (IMO, SOLAS).

    • Strong project leadership, communication, and team management skills.

    • Ability to lead technical discussions with customers, shipyards, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
