Chief Mechanical Engineer – Manufacturing Division

Roles & Responsibilities

The Chief Mechanical Engineer – Manufacturing Division is responsible for leading and overseeing all mechanical engineering functions within the manufacturing organization, including design optimization, process improvement, equipment specification, reliability enhancement, and cross-functional coordination with production, maintenance, QA/QC, and supply chain teams. This senior role drives innovation, ensures engineering excellence, and aligns mechanical solutions with organizational goals in areas like heavy fabrication, machining, pressure vessels, rotating equipment, and plant infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Engineering Leadership:

    • Lead a team of mechanical engineers in the design, development, and improvement of manufacturing equipment and systems.

    • Establish and enforce mechanical engineering standards, codes, and procedures.

  2. Manufacturing Process Optimization:

    • Drive initiatives to improve equipment uptime, reduce energy consumption, and optimize process efficiency.

    • Evaluate and implement new manufacturing technologies, tools, and automation strategies.

  3. Project & Equipment Engineering:

    • Oversee mechanical engineering support for capital equipment procurement, installation, commissioning, and lifecycle management.

    • Develop specifications and review vendor proposals for critical manufacturing systems.

  4. Quality & Compliance:

    • Ensure all mechanical systems and fabricated components comply with applicable standards (ASME, ISO, API, etc.).

    • Support audits, root cause analysis, and corrective/preventive actions for mechanical issues.

  5. Maintenance & Reliability Engineering:

    • Collaborate with maintenance teams on predictive, preventive, and reliability-centered maintenance programs.

    • Analyze failure data and recommend design or operational improvements.

  6. Cross-Functional Coordination:

    • Work closely with production, EHS, planning, procurement, and quality teams to resolve mechanical challenges.

    • Act as the technical authority for mechanical issues affecting manufacturing.

  7. Documentation & Knowledge Management:

    • Approve mechanical engineering documents, calculations, and test plans.

    • Build a knowledge base of best practices and technical guidelines.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Ensure mechanical systems and components are designed for high reliability, easy maintenance, and efficient fabrication.

  • Innovation & Technology: Introduce modern engineering tools (CAD, FEA, PLM) and drive digital transformation in mechanical design and asset management.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Enforce adherence to global codes (ASME, ANSI, AISC, API, ISO).

  • Process Reliability: Enhance plant uptime and asset reliability through robust mechanical solutions.

  • Leadership & Mentoring: Develop technical capabilities of the engineering team and build a strong engineering culture.

Required Skills & Competencies:

Technical Expertise:

  • In-depth knowledge of mechanical systems in manufacturing—fabrication, piping, machining, rotating/static equipment, HVAC, utilities.

  • Proficiency in design software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, ANSYS, etc.).

  • Familiarity with asset management systems (CMMS) and industry 4.0 practices.

Leadership & Management:

  • Proven ability to lead engineering teams, develop talent, and drive strategic initiatives.

  • Strong decision-making and organizational skills.

Analytical & Problem Solving:

  • Ability to analyze complex technical issues and drive innovative, cost-effective solutions.

Communication & Collaboration:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication for technical documentation, cross-functional alignment, and stakeholder engagement.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Education: B.E./B.Tech or M.E./M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering.

  • Certifications:

    • PMP, Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, or reliability engineering certifications (optional but valued)

    • Knowledge of ASME Section VIII, B31.3, API standards

  • Experience: Minimum 15–20 years in mechanical engineering with significant experience in manufacturing operations, including 5–7 years in a senior or leadership role.
