Roles & Responsibilities

The Chief Engineer – Marine Fabrication and Structural Systems is the senior technical authority responsible for leading the design, engineering, and execution of structural systems and fabrication processes for naval and commercial vessels. This role encompasses oversight of hull structure, outfitting integration, modular construction, welding standards, and classification compliance. The Chief Engineer ensures that all structural and fabrication engineering meets operational, regulatory, and customer requirements.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development, review, and approval of structural design and fabrication plans for marine vessels and platforms.

  • Oversee structural calculations, FE analysis, and material selection for hulls, decks, bulkheads, and structural outfitting.

  • Supervise engineering teams responsible for structural layout, modular block integration, and fabrication documentation.

  • Ensure all fabrication processes comply with shipbuilding codes, standards, and class society requirements (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s, etc.).

  • Guide welding procedures, material traceability, and quality assurance practices throughout the fabrication lifecycle.

  • Support integration of structural systems with piping, propulsion foundations, outfitting supports, and topside modules.

  • Participate in design reviews, client meetings, and classification society inspections.

  • Provide technical leadership during construction, drydock, and sea trial phases.

  • Mentor and develop structural and fabrication engineering teams.

  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement in fabrication techniques, modularization, and material usage.


Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related field (Master’s preferred).

  • 10+ years of experience in marine structural design, shipbuilding, or offshore fabrication.

  • Proven leadership in executing large-scale marine fabrication or construction projects.

  • Deep understanding of steel and aluminum structures, joining techniques, and corrosion protection.

  • Proficient in engineering software tools (e.g., AutoCAD, ShipConstructor, Rhino, NAPA, or FEA tools like ANSYS or FEMAP).

  • Strong knowledge of classification society rules (ABS, DNV, BV, LR) and international standards (IMO, SOLAS, ISO).

  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with modular shipbuilding and advanced welding automation technologies.

  • Certification in welding inspection (CSWIP, AWS-CWI) or quality systems (ISO 9001, ASME).

  • Background in military ship construction or high-performance vessel structural engineering.


Working Conditions:

  • Office, shipyard, and field-based environments with periodic travel to project sites.

  • Involves oversight of fabrication shops, drydock environments, and structural inspections.

  • PPE and adherence to safety protocols required during yard visits or vessel access.
