Chassis Systems Engineer

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Senior Chassis Systems Engineer leads the design, development, integration, and validation of complete chassis systems, including suspension, steering, braking, and structural subframes, for vehicle programs from concept to production. This role is critical in driving technical excellence, guiding junior engineers, and ensuring the chassis systems meet performance, cost, weight, safety, and regulatory targets. The engineer will also interface with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and validation groups to deliver robust and manufacturable designs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the full development lifecycle of chassis systems including concept, design, CAE, validation, and production release.

  • Own system architecture decisions and ensure integration with vehicle dynamics, body structure, powertrain, and electrical systems.

  • Define and review engineering specifications, CAD models, drawings, tolerance studies, and DVP&R plans.

  • Mentor and support junior and mid-level chassis engineers, ensuring alignment with program goals and technical standards.

  • Oversee the execution of validation activities (lab and vehicle-level), review test data, and drive corrective actions.

  • Conduct root cause analysis for field or development issues and implement robust engineering solutions.

  • Coordinate with manufacturing, purchasing, and quality teams to ensure designs are feasible, cost-effective, and production-ready.

  • Act as the technical liaison with suppliers, regulatory bodies, and internal vehicle teams.

Key Focus Areas:

  • System-Level Chassis Design and Integration
(Suspension architecture, steering kinematics, subframe structure, and load path management)

  • Advanced Analysis and Design Optimization
(Lightweighting, NVH, durability, ride and handling trade-offs)

  • Design Validation and Durability Testing Oversight
(Correlation of CAE with physical testing, DVP&R management)

  • Cross-Functional Engineering Leadership
(Lead reviews with dynamics, electronics, CAE, and manufacturing)

  • Supplier Development and Quality Engineering Interface
    (APQP, PPAP, DFMEA, production troubleshooting)

  • Mentorship and Technical Direction
(Provide guidance to team members and support technical training)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Automotive, or Aerospace Engineering.

  • 7+ years of experience in chassis engineering and vehicle systems development.

  • Strong experience with chassis components (control arms, knuckles, dampers, subframes, bushings).

  • Proficiency in 3D CAD (CATIA, NX, or similar) and PLM tools (Teamcenter, Windchill).

  • Strong understanding of suspension geometry, ride and handling targets, NVH, and crash considerations.

  • Experience in validation testing and failure mode analysis.

Preferred Skills:

  • Background in EV or hybrid vehicle platforms.

  • Knowledge of active chassis technologies (adaptive dampers, steer-by-wire, etc.).

  • Familiarity with global homologation and compliance requirements (FMVSS, ECE, etc.).

  • Ability to lead multiple programs or platforms in parallel.
