Roles & Responsibilities

The Junior Certification and Compliance Engineer supports the documentation, testing, and regulatory approval processes required for boiler and pressure system compliance with U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) and American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) standards. This role assists in preparing submittals, coordinating inspections, and maintaining compliance records for newbuilds, retrofits, and fabricated systems in marine and offshore applications. The position is ideal for recent graduates or early-career professionals seeking hands-on experience in regulatory compliance within the maritime industry.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in compiling technical documentation and engineering drawings for submittals to regulatory bodies such as USCG, ABS, and other classification societies.

  • Support the tracking and preparation of documentation packages for design approvals, type certifications, and field inspections related to boilers and steam systems.

  • Review technical specs and ensure alignment with ABS Rules, USCG 46 CFR Subchapter F (Marine Engineering), and applicable ASME BPVC sections.

  • Coordinate with senior engineers, inspectors, and project teams to schedule and prepare for witness testing, inspections, and Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT).

  • Record and track non-conformities and follow up on action plans to address audit findings or certification delays.

  • Maintain internal databases for compliance documentation, certificates, and regulatory correspondence.

  • Assist in updating internal standards and templates based on new code updates or regulatory requirements.

  • Attend meetings with classification representatives, shipowners, and QA teams as a support engineer.

  • Support compliance audits, both internal and external, and help ensure traceability of materials and manufacturing processes.


Key Focus Areas:

  • Regulatory Documentation: Compile and submit packages in accordance with USCG and ABS requirements.

  • Standards Compliance: Familiarity with ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code and marine-specific regulatory frameworks.

  • Inspection & Testing Support: Assist with on-site or vendor inspections and testing documentation.

  • Project Coordination: Support multiple boiler projects through various certification and compliance stages.

  • Continuous Learning: Develop expertise in marine codes and gain experience interacting with regulators and certifiers.


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related field.

  • 0–3 years of experience in engineering, QA/QC, or compliance in a marine or industrial environment.

  • Basic understanding of steam systems, boilers, and pressure vessel components preferred.

  • Familiarity with USCG, ABS, or ASME BPVC codes is an advantage.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, CAD tools, and document control systems.

  • Strong communication, organizational, and technical writing skills.


Preferred Credentials / Skills:

  • Internship or co-op experience with a shipyard, marine equipment OEM, or classification society.

  • Exposure to inspection practices (FAT, SAT) and regulatory submittals.

  • Interest in becoming a subject matter expert in marine compliance and certification engineering.
