Roles & Responsibilities

The Mid-Level CAD Technician – Marine Mechanical Drafting is responsible for preparing, modifying, and managing 2D and 3D technical drawings and models of mechanical systems used in marine vessels and offshore platforms. This role plays a key part in supporting mechanical engineers with the design and integration of systems such as piping, HVAC, propulsion, and auxiliary machinery.

The technician is expected to work independently on assigned design packages and contribute to multi-disciplinary design coordination while ensuring adherence to industry standards and client specifications.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Develop detailed 2D and 3D drawings and models for marine mechanical systems, including piping, HVAC, machinery foundations, and system layouts.

    • Coordinate mechanical design layouts with structural, electrical, and control systems teams.

    • Generate fabrication and installation drawings, isometrics, spool drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs).

    • Apply standards and specifications from classification societies (e.g., ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s) and client requirements.

    • Review and incorporate redlines and markups from senior engineers and project stakeholders.

    • Support drawing change management, document control, and version tracking.

    • Participate in design reviews and contribute to resolving spatial, routing, or clash issues.

    • Liaise with shipyards or manufacturing partners to clarify drawing intent and resolve technical questions.

    • Train and support junior CAD staff as needed.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Detailed Marine Mechanical Drafting

    • Prepare complete and precise 2D/3D designs for mechanical systems and equipment installations.

  2. Interdisciplinary Design Coordination

    • Interface with electrical, structural, and controls teams for integrated system layouts.

  3. CAD Standards & Compliance

    • Maintain quality and consistency in line with project and regulatory requirements.

  4. Drawing Revision & Lifecycle Management

    • Manage revisions, issue control, and drawing documentation throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications & Skills:

    • Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Marine Engineering, or CAD Design.

    • 3–6 years of experience in CAD drafting for marine or mechanical systems.

    • Proficient in AutoCAD and at least one 3D CAD platform (e.g., ShipConstructor, Inventor, SolidWorks, AVEVA Marine).

    • Strong understanding of shipboard mechanical systems (piping, HVAC, propulsion machinery, etc.).

    • Familiar with international maritime regulations and classification society standards (ABS, DNV, IMO).

    • Excellent attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, build-ready drawings.

    • Good problem-solving skills and ability to work on multiple tasks with minimal supervision.

    • Effective communication skills and team collaboration capabilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience in shipyard environments or with ship production workflows.

    • Familiarity with digital twin or model-based design concepts.

    • Knowledge of 3D clash detection tools (e.g., Navisworks) and PDM/PLM systems.
