The Mid-Level Boiler Technician is responsible for the operation, maintenance, inspection, and minor repair of marine boiler systems, including steam generators, auxiliary heating systems, and associated steam loops. This role focuses on ensuring reliable, safe, and efficient boiler operation aboard vessels such as commercial ships, naval platforms, or offshore assets. Technicians at this level perform both routine and intermediate-level troubleshooting, assist in system tuning, and ensure compliance with marine engineering and safety standards.
Operate marine boilers (fire-tube, water-tube, or coil-type) and monitor parameters such as steam pressure, feedwater levels, burner conditions, and flue gas performance.
Perform routine maintenance, including burner tuning, fuel/air ratio checks, soot blower operation, and cleaning of heat exchange surfaces.
Assist in troubleshooting boiler faults, including flame failure, feedwater pump trips, steam leaks, and safety shutdowns.
Conduct chemical treatment tests on boiler water and maintain water quality logs.
Maintain and test boiler safety devices, including pressure relief valves, low-water cutoffs, and flame safeguard systems.
Support preparation and execution of hydrostatic pressure tests, Class inspections, and internal boiler surveys.
Participate in fuel system inspection and burner overhauls during dry-dock or scheduled maintenance windows.
Record and analyze operational logs, report abnormalities, and suggest efficiency improvements.
Provide technical guidance to junior technicians or engine room crew and assist with emergency drills involving steam systems.
Ensure full compliance with SOLAS, IMO, ISM, ABS, or DNV safety and performance standards for boiler operations.
Intermediate-level boiler operation, performance monitoring, and maintenance
Water treatment management and burner servicing
Safety device checks and compliance with marine Class requirements
Fault identification, basic root cause diagnosis, and incident response
Education:
Technical diploma or certificate in Marine Engineering, Boiler Operation, or Mechanical Systems (required)
Training in boiler chemical treatment or flame safety systems (preferred)
Experience:
3–6 years of marine boiler operation and maintenance experience (naval or commercial vessels)
Experience with auxiliary boilers, steam turbines, or thermal oil heating systems is desirable
Technical Skills:
Proficient in operating boiler control panels, testing safety valves, managing feedwater and blowdown cycles
Working knowledge of combustion tuning, pressure systems, steam traps, and fuel oil conditioning systems
Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, equipment manuals, and Class survey requirements
Basic troubleshooting skills for sensors, relays, igniters, and mechanical components
Familiar with regulatory inspection protocols and documentation (ABS, DNV, SOLAS)
Soft Skills:
Reliable and independent in boiler watchstanding and routine duties
Strong communication and leadership for mentoring junior crew
Detail-oriented with strong documentation habits and system awareness
Able to respond to steam-related emergencies under pressure
