Job Title: Boiler Technician – Marine Systems (Navy BT Rating Equivalent)
Job Summary:
The Junior Boiler Technician assists in the operation, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of marine steam generation systems, including auxiliary boilers and associated equipment such as feedwater pumps, fuel oil systems, and condensate handling units. Modeled after the Navy Boiler Technician (BT) Rating, this entry-level role is designed for hands-on technical personnel beginning their careers in shipboard steam systems. The technician works under close supervision in engine rooms, aboard naval or commercial vessels, or within marine test facilities.
Key Responsibilities:

Assist with the startup, operation, and shutdown of marine fire-tube and water-tube boilers.

Monitor boiler pressure, water level, fuel input, and combustion conditions using gauges and control panels.

Conduct routine blowdown operations, burner cleaning, and soot removal to maintain boiler efficiency.

Support basic maintenance tasks on boiler components such as burners, economizers, feed pumps, and safety valves.

Help perform daily checks on fuel systems, air compressors, deaerators, and condensate returns.

Follow safety protocols for hot surfaces, confined spaces, and high-pressure steam handling.

Assist in preparing the boiler for hydrostatic testing, inspections, or chemical cleaning.

Keep accurate records of boiler log entries, performance trends, and maintenance activities.

Learn and apply marine boiler regulations and procedures under guidance from licensed engineers or senior technicians.

Participate in team briefings and cross-train in related propulsion and auxiliary systems.

Qualifications & Skills:
Education:

High school diploma or equivalent (required)

Technical/vocational training in Marine Engineering, Power Plant Technology, or Mechanical Trades (preferred)
Experience:

0–2 years of hands-on experience in boiler operations, marine systems, or related mechanical roles

Internship or military exposure (e.g., Navy BT training) is a plus
Technical Skills:

Basic understanding of boiler function, combustion control, and pressure system safety

Familiarity with gauges, feedwater systems, and steam loop components

Ability to use hand tools for routine maintenance (wrenches, cleaning tools, gaskets)
