The Senior Boiler Plant Supervisor is responsible for the strategic oversight, technical leadership, and regulatory compliance of boiler plant operations, ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient generation and distribution of steam and/or hot water. This position leads multi-shift teams, oversees maintenance programs, and ensures adherence to industry and environmental standards. The role serves as the senior-most authority within the boiler plant and contributes to capital planning, reliability improvements, and energy optimization efforts.
Lead all aspects of boiler plant operations, including the generation of steam, operation of high- and low-pressure boilers, hot water systems, and auxiliary equipment.
Manage and supervise multi-shift plant operations to ensure 24/7 availability and operational continuity.
Ensure operational parameters are maintained within design and safety limits through system monitoring and controls (e.g., SCADA/BMS).
Oversee all preventive and predictive maintenance activities to maximize uptime and equipment lifespan.
Supervise and troubleshoot combustion systems, pressure controls, steam traps, deaerators, condensate return, and water treatment systems.
Collaborate with engineering and reliability teams on upgrades, retrofits, and modernization projects.
Ensure full compliance with federal, state, and local safety and environmental regulations, including OSHA, NFPA, EPA, and ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code.
Lead internal audits, prepare for regulatory inspections, and maintain required documentation and certifications.
Champion a culture of safety, conducting regular safety meetings, hazard assessments, and incident investigations.
Manage, train, and evaluate boiler operators, shift leads, and maintenance technicians.
Establish and maintain SOPs, training manuals, and emergency response procedures.
Develop workforce skills in modern boiler technology, control systems, and water chemistry.
Analyze energy use, fuel consumption, and thermal losses to identify and implement operational improvements.
Support decarbonization initiatives, fuel transitions, and energy-saving projects.
Report on KPIs such as boiler efficiency, downtime, maintenance compliance, and cost performance.
Contribute to capital planning for major repairs, boiler replacements, system expansions, and infrastructure upgrades.
Provide technical input into new facility designs, energy center modernization, or greenfield projects.
Interface with vendors, contractors, and consultants on design, procurement, and commissioning.

Fuel systems (natural gas, oil, dual-fuel) and combustion control
Water treatment systems and chemical dosing
SCADA, PLCs, and advanced boiler control systems
Compliance: ASME, NFPA 85, OSHA PSM, local boiler codes
Associate or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Power Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related field
8–12 years of progressive experience in boiler plant operations, with 3–5 years in a supervisory or senior technical leadership role
Valid Boiler Operator or Stationary Engineer License (First Class or equivalent) as required by jurisdiction
Extensive knowledge of boiler codes, energy management, combustion systems, and mechanical/electrical systems
Experience managing budgets, maintenance programs, and regulatory inspections
Certified Boiler Operator (ASME, NBBI, or local licensing board)
Certified Energy Manager (CEM) – optional
NFPA 85 Boiler Code training
OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Safety Certification
Lean/Kaizen or Six Sigma familiarity
