Roles & Responsibilities

The Boiler Plant Supervisor (Mid-Level) is responsible for managing the daily operation, maintenance, and personnel of the boiler plant to ensure the reliable, safe, and efficient generation of steam and/or hot water. This role includes supervising boiler operators, coordinating planned maintenance, enforcing safety and compliance standards, and optimizing system performance for production or building operations.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Boiler Plant Operations

  • Supervise and participate in the daily operation of high- and low-pressure steam and hot water boiler systems, including feedwater systems, combustion controls, fuel systems, and pressure relief devices.

  • Monitor system performance via control systems (e.g., SCADA or BMS) and field inspections.

  • Ensure proper startup, operation, and shutdown procedures are followed during all shifts.

2. Maintenance Oversight

  • Schedule and oversee preventive and corrective maintenance activities for boilers and auxiliary equipment.

  • Coordinate with maintenance teams and contractors for planned shutdowns, inspections, and repairs.

  • Maintain boiler logs, maintenance records, and equipment service documentation.

3. Team Supervision

  • Lead a team of boiler operators and plant technicians, assigning tasks, monitoring performance, and ensuring shift coverage.

  • Train personnel on standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety practices, and emergency response.

  • Evaluate staff performance and provide input on hiring, training, and development.

4. Safety and Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with OSHA, NFPA, EPA, ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code, and state/local boiler regulations.

  • Conduct routine plant inspections to identify and mitigate safety hazards or non-conformances.

  • Prepare for and support regulatory inspections, including annual boiler certifications and emissions testing.

5. Operational Efficiency & Optimization

  • Analyze operating data to identify opportunities for improving plant efficiency, fuel consumption, and system reliability.

  • Implement energy conservation initiatives and support sustainability efforts.

  • Troubleshoot abnormal conditions and resolve process interruptions quickly.

6. Emergency Preparedness

  • Respond to system alarms, boiler failures, or safety incidents in coordination with the engineering and EHS teams.

  • Serve as the on-call supervisor for urgent situations outside of regular hours (as needed).


Focus Areas:

  • High-pressure steam systems and controls

  • Boiler water treatment and chemical dosing

  • Burner management and flame safeguard systems

  • Deaerators, economizers, condensate recovery systems

  • Compliance: ASME, OSHA, NFPA, EPA, and local mechanical codes

  • CMMS systems and plant performance monitoring tools


Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or technical certification in Mechanical Engineering, Power Plant Operations, HVAC, or related field (Bachelor’s preferred)

  • 5–8 years of experience in boiler plant operations, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead role

  • Valid Boiler Operator License (First Class, Stationary Engineer, or per local/state requirement)

  • Proficient in interpreting schematics, P&IDs, and control logic diagrams

  • Familiar with CMMS software, SCADA/BMS systems, and Microsoft Office Suite


Preferred Certifications:

  • ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code familiarity

  • Certified Energy Manager (CEM) – optional

  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification

  • NFPA 85 (Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazards Code) training
