Boiler Plant Operations Manager – Vessel or Shore-Based

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Boiler Plant Operations Manager is responsible for the safe, efficient, and regulatory-compliant operation of boiler systems—whether on a vessel or within a shore-based facility supporting marine or industrial operations. The role includes oversight of high- and low-pressure boilers, auxiliary steam systems, and associated thermal equipment. The manager leads operations personnel, ensures adherence to safety protocols, and supports routine and emergent maintenance to minimize downtime and ensure continuous plant reliability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage day-to-day operations of high- and low-pressure steam boiler systems, including burners, feedwater systems, economizers, and condensate recovery.

  • Supervise and schedule boiler technicians, operators, and maintenance teams to ensure continuous and compliant plant performance.

  • Implement and enforce safety procedures, lock-out/tag-out policies, and emergency shutdown protocols in accordance with OSHA, IMO, or local maritime safety standards.

  • Monitor system parameters, fuel consumption, emissions, and thermal efficiency using control panels or digital SCADA/PLC interfaces.

  • Coordinate inspection schedules, preventive maintenance programs, and shutdown activities in alignment with regulatory and class requirements.

  • Conduct or oversee root cause analysis of system malfunctions, boiler trips, or equipment degradation.

  • Maintain logs, technical records, and compliance documentation for internal audits and regulatory inspections.

  • Liaise with engineering teams, OEMs, and classification societies to support plant upgrades, automation projects, or system modifications.

  • Ensure readiness for operations that require steam power—e.g., propulsion trials (vessels), fabrication support (shipyards), or process heating (offshore/onshore).

Key Focus Areas:

  • Plant Operations & Monitoring: Manage the performance of all steam-generating equipment and auxiliary systems.

  • Personnel Management: Train, supervise, and evaluate the operations crew to maintain a high standard of technical competence.

  • Safety & Regulatory Compliance: Enforce adherence to international, national, and local boiler operation and safety codes.

  • Preventive & Corrective Maintenance: Oversee condition-based and scheduled maintenance for maximum uptime and safety.

  • Operational Efficiency: Optimize fuel use, emissions output, and system response to changing operational loads.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Industrial Technology (or equivalent practical experience).

  • 7–12 years of experience in boiler operations, with at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or managerial role.

  • Proficient in steam plant control systems, fuel systems, emissions controls, and water chemistry.

  • Familiar with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, MARPOL, SOLAS, and/or OSHA compliance requirements (depending on facility type).

  • Strong leadership, troubleshooting, and organizational skills.

Preferred Credentials / Experience:

  • Stationary Engineer’s License or Boiler Operator Certification (shore-based), or

  • Marine Engineer License or Certificate of Competency (vessel-based).

  • Experience in marine, offshore, or industrial plant environments.

  • Familiarity with automated boiler control systems, including BMS and remote monitoring technologies.
