The Senior Boiler Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of high-pressure steam boilers and related auxiliary equipment. Holding a valid Class 1, 2, or 3 Boiler Operator license (as required by state regulations), this individual oversees boiler operations, supervises junior staff, responds to critical faults, and ensures compliance with safety and environmental standards.
Operate, monitor, and adjust high- and low-pressure boilers, economizers, feedwater systems, condensate return systems, and fuel handling systems.
Conduct thorough equipment inspections and execute preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
Maintain optimal boiler performance through combustion control, water level regulation, and feedwater treatment monitoring.
Record operating data (e.g., steam pressure, fuel usage, water chemistry, and temperature) and maintain accurate shift logs and reports.
Respond promptly to alarms and abnormal conditions; perform emergency shutdowns when necessary.
Ensure compliance with all applicable state/local boiler codes, ASME/NBIC standards, and environmental regulations.
Supervise and train junior boiler operators or utility technicians.
Collaborate with maintenance and engineering teams for troubleshooting and system upgrades.
Support energy efficiency initiatives by identifying and implementing boiler performance improvements.
Participate in safety audits, risk assessments, and regulatory inspections.
High-Pressure Boiler Operation
Ensure continuous and safe steam production to support plant processes.
Regulatory Compliance
Operate in accordance with local/state licensing requirements and industry standards.
Preventive Maintenance & Troubleshooting
Identify and resolve mechanical, electrical, or control system issues in boiler operations.
Water Treatment & Chemistry
Monitor and maintain water quality to prevent scaling, corrosion, and boiler damage.
Leadership & Supervision
Mentor junior operators, lead shift activities, and ensure operational continuity.
Valid Class 1 / 2 / 3 Boiler Operator license (as per state or regional regulatory body).
5+ years of experience operating industrial boiler systems in utility, manufacturing, or power plant environments.
In-depth knowledge of boiler systems, steam plant operations, combustion controls, and water treatment practices.
Familiarity with boiler safety devices, alarms, lockout/tagout, and confined space procedures.
Proficient in using SCADA, PLC, or BMS systems for remote monitoring and control.
Strong troubleshooting, documentation, and communication skills.
Physical ability to work in hot environments, climb ladders, and respond to mechanical issues on-site.
