The Mid-Level Boiler Operator (Class 1 / 2 / 3 Certified) is responsible for independently operating and maintaining high- and low-pressure boiler systems, ensuring reliable steam and hot water generation to support plant operations. The role involves real-time monitoring, routine adjustments, safety testing, and troubleshooting, with accountability for compliance with local and state boiler regulations.
Operate and monitor high/low-pressure steam boilers, feedwater systems, fuel supply equipment, and auxiliaries according to operational protocols.
Conduct and log hourly readings of pressure, temperature, water levels, and combustion conditions.
Perform water testing and chemical treatment adjustments to maintain proper water chemistry.
Carry out scheduled blowdowns and manage fuel supply lines (gas/oil) to optimize combustion.
Troubleshoot boiler-related issues including flame failure, low-water conditions, and system alarms.
Execute minor maintenance tasks (valve checks, burner cleanings, gasket replacements, pump lubrication).
Participate in planned shutdowns, startups, and seasonal maintenance activities.
Ensure operation logs, checklists, and reports are updated accurately and submitted in a timely manner.
Maintain boiler room cleanliness, enforce safe work practices, and assist with incident reporting and investigation.
Support junior operators with on-the-job guidance and procedural training as assigned.
Independent Boiler Operation
Manage boiler operations during assigned shifts with minimal supervision.
Water Chemistry Control
Test and adjust water quality parameters using proper chemical dosing procedures.
Combustion Efficiency & Fuel Management
Monitor burner performance, fuel flow, and adjust controls to ensure optimal combustion and efficiency.
Equipment Reliability & Safety
Proactively identify and report mechanical or safety issues before failures occur.
Regulatory Compliance & Recordkeeping
Operate within the guidelines of ASME, NBIC, OSHA, and state-specific boiler codes.
High school diploma or GED; technical certification or associate degree in mechanical, electrical, or utility operations preferred.
Must hold a valid Boiler Operator License (Class 1, 2, or 3) based on local/state requirements.
3–5 years of hands-on experience operating industrial boilers (firetube/watertube) in manufacturing, power, or utility facilities.
Solid understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer, combustion, and steam system dynamics.
Familiarity with Boiler Management Systems (BMS), SCADA/HMI interfaces, and alarm response protocols.
Capable of lifting 50+ lbs, climbing ladders, and working in heat/noise-prone environments.
Ability to work shifts, weekends, and respond to after-hours emergencies.
