The Junior Boiler Operator (Class 1 / 2 / 3 Certified) is responsible for assisting in the daily operation, monitoring, and basic maintenance of high- and low-pressure steam boilers, auxiliaries, and support systems. This entry-level position supports certified boiler operations while gaining practical experience under the guidance of senior staff, in full compliance with local/state licensing requirements.
Monitor boiler operating parameters including pressure, temperature, feedwater levels, and combustion efficiency.
Assist in starting, operating, and shutting down steam boilers and associated auxiliary systems (feed pumps, condensate return, fuel systems).
Perform routine water chemistry checks and adjust chemical dosing under supervision.
Record hourly logs of boiler readings, maintenance activities, and safety checks.
Assist in performing minor maintenance on valves, pumps, blowdown systems, and burners.
Execute routine blowdown procedures for boiler water and mud drums to maintain water quality.
Respond to operational alarms and escalate issues to senior boiler operators or supervisors.
Comply with all plant safety rules, lockout/tagout procedures, and confined space entry protocols.
Maintain housekeeping standards in boiler rooms and utility areas.
Participate in training activities to progress toward higher boiler license certification.
Boiler Operation Assistance
Support the safe and efficient operation of boilers under licensed supervision.
Instrumentation Monitoring
Regularly read and log pressure, temperature, flow, and fuel data to identify performance trends.
Water Treatment and Blowdown
Learn and assist in boiler water testing, dosing, and maintaining correct blowdown schedules.
Maintenance Support
Participate in basic mechanical maintenance and lubrication tasks on boiler system components.
Licensing Compliance
Adhere to state-specific regulations for Class 1 / 2 / 3 certified boiler operators and continue educational progression.
High school diploma or technical school graduate.
Must possess a valid Class 1 / 2 / 3 Boiler Operator License in accordance with applicable state laws or be in the process of acquiring one.
0–2 years of experience in boiler plant operations or industrial utilities preferred.
Basic mechanical aptitude and understanding of thermodynamics, steam, and pressure systems.
Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and respond to emergency calls.
Physically fit to work in hot, noisy, and confined boiler room environments.
