Boiler Mechanic – Feed Pumps, Tubes, Burners

Roles & Responsibilities

The Junior Boiler Mechanic is responsible for assisting in the maintenance, inspection, and minor repairs of key boiler components including feedwater pumps, boiler tubes, and burner assemblies. Working under the supervision of senior personnel, the junior mechanic supports safe and reliable operation of boiler systems through mechanical tasks, inspections, and preventive maintenance routines.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of boiler tubes to prevent scaling, fouling, and corrosion.

  • Support routine maintenance and servicing of feedwater pumps, including gland packing, seal replacements, and alignment checks.

  • Aid in the disassembly, inspection, and reassembly of burner assemblies, including cleaning nozzles and checking igniters.

  • Carry out basic mechanical tasks such as tightening flanges, replacing gaskets, lubricating moving parts, and ensuring correct bolt torque.

  • Help perform leak checks, mechanical alignments, and hydrostatic pressure tests under supervision.

  • Maintain maintenance logs, daily activity reports, and assist in parts inventory tracking.

  • Ensure work is performed safely by following company SOPs and relevant boiler safety standards (ASME, NBIC, OSHA).

  • Assist in shutdown, startup, and post-maintenance checks for boilers during scheduled outages.

  • Communicate with senior mechanics and supervisors on equipment status and potential mechanical issues.


🎯 Key Focus Areas:

  1. Mechanical Support for Boiler Feed Pumps

    • Assist in the inspection, lubrication, and minor servicing of feed pumps to ensure proper water flow to the boiler.

  2. Tube Maintenance & Cleaning

    • Learn and support basic tube cleaning techniques (mechanical or chemical) to maintain efficient heat transfer.

  3. Burner Assembly Support

    • Aid in maintaining burner nozzles, atomizers, fuel lines, and flame detection components to ensure stable combustion.

  4. Preventive Maintenance Execution

    • Execute routine mechanical maintenance tasks under guidance to prevent unplanned downtime.

  5. Workplace Safety & Compliance

    • Follow proper lockout/tagout procedures and work safely around high-temperature and high-pressure equipment.


📘 Qualifications:

  • ITI, Trade Certificate, or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Boiler Maintenance, or related field.

  • 0–2 years of experience in boiler or industrial mechanical maintenance.

  • Basic understanding of pump operation, burner components, and steam system fundamentals.

  • Willingness to learn safety protocols and mechanical maintenance best practices.

  • Ability to use basic hand tools, torque wrenches, calipers, and alignment tools.

  • Physically fit and comfortable working in hot, confined, or elevated environments.
