Boiler Engineering Manager

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Boiler Engineering Manager is responsible for the overall technical oversight, performance, and compliance of boiler systems within power generation or industrial plants. This role manages the design review, operation support, maintenance engineering, and lifecycle management of high-pressure steam-generating equipment, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant operation.

The position requires a deep understanding of boiler design principles, thermal performance, material degradation mechanisms, pressure part integrity, and regulatory compliance (ASME, IBR, etc.). The manager will lead a team of engineers and collaborate closely with operations, maintenance, safety, and regulatory teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage all engineering activities related to boilers, including design support, operation analysis, maintenance planning, and troubleshooting.

  • Ensure boiler systems meet all applicable safety, environmental, and code compliance standards (ASME Section I, IBR, NBIC, API, etc.).

  • Oversee thermal performance assessments, efficiency improvement initiatives, and emissions reduction strategies.

  • Manage inspection programs, risk assessments, and life extension studies for boiler pressure parts and auxiliaries.

  • Provide root cause analysis (RCA) and engineering solutions for boiler failures, tube leaks, slagging, fouling, or other operational issues.

  • Support the specification, procurement, and evaluation of boiler components and materials (e.g., tubes, headers, burners, refractory).

  • Coordinate major overhauls, retrofits, and modifications in collaboration with OEMs, contractors, and internal teams.

  • Develop and maintain boiler technical documentation, engineering standards, and performance monitoring dashboards.

  • Guide junior engineers and technicians, providing mentorship and technical training.

  • Interface with external agencies, regulators, and certifying bodies during inspections and audits.

Key Focus Areas:

  1. Boiler Performance & Efficiency

    • Optimize steam generation, combustion tuning, and heat recovery for maximum plant efficiency.

  2. Pressure Part Integrity & Safety

    • Ensure structural and operational safety through regular inspections, NDT, and code compliance.

  3. Maintenance Engineering Support

    • Support preventive and predictive maintenance programs, outage planning, and repair quality control.

  4. Compliance & Documentation

    • Ensure all boiler systems meet local and international regulatory requirements and maintain up-to-date records.

  5. Team Leadership & Collaboration

    • Lead a skilled team of engineers, coordinate across departments, and drive a high-performance engineering culture.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Power Engineering; Master’s preferred.

  • 10–15+ years of experience in boiler engineering, preferably in thermal power plants or large industrial settings.

  • Strong knowledge of boiler types (subcritical, supercritical, CFB, HRSG), fuel types, and combustion systems.

  • In-depth understanding of thermal performance, pressure vessel codes, material degradation, and failure analysis.

  • Experience in leading engineering teams, vendor management, and project coordination.

  • Proficiency with engineering tools like P&ID, DCS data, CFD analysis, and Boiler Performance Monitoring Software.

  • Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.

Preferred Certifications:

  • Boiler Operation Engineer (BOE) or equivalent license

  • API 579 (Fitness-for-Service) or API 510 (Pressure Vessel Inspector)

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) or PE License

  • NEBOSH / ISO 45001 certification for safety awareness

Work Environment:

  • Based at corporate engineering office or power plant with routine field visits for inspections, troubleshooting, and audits.

  • May require working during plant outages or emergencies.
