Boiler Control Systems Technician (BMS/PLC/SCADA)

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Boiler Control Systems Technician (Mid-Level) is responsible for maintaining and optimizing the performance of Boiler Management Systems (BMS), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and SCADA platforms used in high- and low-pressure steam systems. The technician ensures safe, efficient, and reliable control of boiler operations by performing diagnostics, implementing minor control logic modifications, and coordinating instrumentation tasks across utility systems. This role bridges operational support and technical maintenance for automation in boiler operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine diagnostics, troubleshooting, and maintenance of BMS, PLC, and SCADA systems to support boiler automation.

  • Calibrate, configure, and maintain instrumentation (temperature, pressure, flow, level sensors, transmitters, flame scanners, and actuators).

  • Support loop checks, start-up/shutdown sequences, and logic validation for burners, fuel control, draft, and interlocks.

  • Monitor and analyze system performance via SCADA dashboards and historian logs to identify abnormal trends or faults.

  • Implement minor PLC/HMI logic changes under engineering supervision for efficiency improvements or safety upgrades.

  • Maintain compliance with NFPA 85, ASME CSD-1, and other relevant codes for boiler safety and control systems.

  • Assist with documentation, wiring diagram updates, tag database maintenance, and system backups.

  • Participate in plant shutdowns, start-ups, and project commissioning involving control systems and instrumentation.

  • Train junior technicians and assist in developing SOPs for control system inspections and calibrations.

  • Coordinate with operations and mechanical teams for interdepartmental issue resolution.

🎯 Key Focus Areas:

  1. BMS/PLC/SCADA System Reliability

    • Ensure all boiler automation systems are operating correctly, safely, and efficiently.

  2. Instrumentation Maintenance & Calibration

    • Keep pressure, temperature, flow, and level sensors fully functional and accurately calibrated.

  3. System Diagnostics & Root Cause Analysis

    • Investigate alarm events, sequence faults, and communication losses and implement corrective actions.

  4. Code Compliance & Safety

    • Adhere to and support compliance with NFPA 85, ASME Section I, and OSHA standards related to control systems and combustion safety.

  5. Automation Support for Energy Efficiency

    • Identify control-based opportunities to optimize fuel use, reduce emissions, and stabilize boiler load responses.

📘 Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree or Diploma in Instrumentation & Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Automation, or similar field. Bachelor's preferred.

  • 3–6 years of experience in control systems or automation, preferably in steam or boiler plant environments.

  • Hands-on experience with BMS platforms, PLCs (e.g., Allen-Bradley, Siemens), and SCADA/HMI software (e.g., Wonderware, Ignition, iFIX).

  • Knowledge of loop tuning, control logic interpretation, and safety interlock testing.

  • Familiarity with ISA standards, Modbus, Profibus, and Ethernet/IP communication protocols.

  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and understanding of electrical and control schematics.

  • Ability to work on-call, during outages, or in shift-based roles if required.

  • Strong attention to safety, documentation, and collaboration with operations and engineering teams.
