The Supervisor-Level Automation Technician – Sample Prep Systems oversees a team of automation technicians and ensures the smooth operation, maintenance, and compliance of automated sample preparation equipment in laboratory environments. This role is responsible for team performance, technical oversight, scheduling, regulatory adherence, and collaboration across departments to support high-throughput and mission-critical lab operations.
Team Leadership & Workforce Management
Supervise, train, and mentor a team of automation technicians working on robotic sample prep systems.
Schedule daily tasks, manage workload distribution, and ensure timely issue resolution.
Operational Oversight of Automation Systems
Oversee the installation, configuration, and validation of sample prep automation (liquid handlers, robotic arms, de-cappers, centrifuges, etc.).
Ensure system availability and performance across all supported labs or departments.
Regulatory Compliance & Documentation Control
Ensure team adherence to GMP, GLP, 21 CFR Part 11, ISO 17025, and other lab regulatory standards.
Review and approve maintenance logs, deviation reports, and validation records (IQ/OQ/PQ).
Process Improvement & Performance Optimization
Identify recurring issues, root causes, and implement process improvements for increased equipment reliability and throughput.
Collaborate with engineering and QA on lean initiatives, automation upgrades, and continuous improvement programs.
Cross-Functional Collaboration & Stakeholder Communication
Act as the point of contact for lab managers, QA, IT, and automation engineers regarding sample prep automation.
Provide status updates, KPIs, and risk assessments to leadership as needed.
Inventory, Vendor Coordination & Asset Management
Manage spare parts inventory, maintenance schedules, and vendor service contracts for automation systems.
Coordinate external support and vendor training when required.
Training & Compliance Culture Development
Develop technician SOPs, training materials, and onboarding plans.
Foster a culture of safety, compliance, and continuous skill development within the team.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Automation, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related technical field preferred.
Experience:
7+ years of experience in laboratory automation, with at least 2 years in a lead or supervisory role.
Skills:
In-depth knowledge of automated sample preparation equipment, troubleshooting, scheduling, compliance documentation, and team leadership.
Proficiency with SCADA/HMI interfaces, lab control software, and quality systems.
