Job Title: Automation Systems Engineer (Electrical)
Job Summary:
The Junior Automation Systems Engineer (Electrical) is responsible for assisting in the design, programming, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical automation systems. This entry-level role involves supporting automation projects using PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers), SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems, and other industrial automation technologies. Under the guidance of senior engineers, the Junior Engineer will help in configuring, testing, and optimizing automation systems, gaining hands-on experience with electrical systems, control strategies, and system integration.
Key Responsibilities:
System Design and Configuration Support:
- Assist in designing automation systems, including control panels, PLCs, SCADA systems, sensors, and actuators.
- Support senior engineers in the selection and configuration of electrical components and automation systems based on project specifications.
- Help in creating technical documentation, such as wiring diagrams, system configurations, and control strategies.
PLC Programming and Configuration:
- Assist in programming PLCs using basic programming languages (e.g., Ladder Logic, Structured Text) to control processes and machinery.
- Support in configuring and testing SCADA systems and HMI (Human-Machine Interface) to communicate effectively with automation hardware.
- Collaborate with the team to ensure seamless integration between PLCs, SCADA, and other automation components.
Installation and Commissioning:
- Help in the installation of electrical automation systems, including PLCs, control panels, sensors, and wiring.
- Participate in commissioning and testing new systems, ensuring that all components work together to meet performance and safety standards.
- Verify that systems are installed correctly and test that all components are functioning as expected.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
- Assist with routine maintenance and troubleshooting of automation systems, including PLCs, sensors, actuators, and control systems.
- Help identify faults in the system, troubleshoot electrical issues, and work with senior engineers to resolve them quickly.
- Perform basic repairs and replacements of faulty components to ensure system uptime and reliability.
System Testing and Optimization:
- Support testing and calibration of automation systems to ensure they meet operational requirements and client specifications.
- Assist with system optimization by analyzing performance data and suggesting minor improvements to enhance efficiency or reduce downtime.
- Work with the team to identify potential improvements and implement adjustments to optimize system performance.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Keep accurate records of work completed, including system configurations, wiring diagrams, test results, and troubleshooting logs.
- Assist in the preparation of progress reports, documentation for system maintenance, and updates to technical manuals.
- Maintain system records and ensure that all documentation is up-to-date and accessible for future reference.
Safety and Compliance:
- Follow electrical safety standards, procedures, and regulations (e.g., NEC, IEC) when working with electrical systems and automation hardware.
- Ensure adherence to company safety protocols, including lock-out/tag-out procedures during maintenance activities.
- Assist senior engineers in ensuring that systems comply with relevant safety and environmental regulations.
Learning and Development:
- Continuously develop technical skills in electrical and automation systems by assisting senior engineers and attending training sessions.
- Stay updated with the latest developments in automation technologies, PLC programming, and industrial control systems.
- Take part in knowledge-sharing activities and apply new skills and techniques to improve system performance.
Collaboration and Support:
- Work closely with senior engineers, technicians, and other team members to support the successful implementation of automation projects.
- Provide technical support during installation, troubleshooting, and optimization phases.
- Participate in team meetings to discuss progress, challenges, and new developments in automation technologies.
Skills and Knowledge Required:
- Basic understanding of electrical systems, automation, and control systems.
- Familiarity with PLC programming languages such as Ladder Logic, Structured Text, or Function Block Diagram.
- Knowledge of industrial automation systems, including SCADA, HMI, and control panels.
- Ability to read and interpret technical documents, such as wiring diagrams, schematics, and manuals.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot electrical and automation system issues.
- Ability to work in a team environment, communicate effectively, and follow instructions.
- Willingness to learn new technologies and continuously develop technical expertise.
Educational Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Coursework, projects, or academic experience related to PLC programming, automation systems, or electrical systems is beneficial.
- Additional certifications in automation, PLC programming, or electrical safety are a plus but not required.
Experience:
- 1-2 years of experience in electrical systems, automation, or control systems.
- Internships, academic projects, or hands-on experience with PLCs, automation systems, or electrical control systems is advantageous but not required.
Tools and Technologies:
- Familiarity with PLC programming software (e.g., Siemens TIA Portal, Rockwell Studio 5000) is beneficial but not required.
- Knowledge of electrical testing tools, such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and circuit analyzers.
- Exposure to SCADA systems, HMI development tools, or electrical design software is a plus but not required.
