Job Title: Senior Assembly Engineer

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Assembly Engineer to lead and manage assembly engineering projects and teams. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the development, optimization, and execution of complex assembly processes, ensuring high-quality standards, and delivering innovative solutions to mechanical assembly challenges. As a senior member of the engineering team, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams, mentor junior engineers, and implement strategic improvements that drive operational excellence. This role offers an exciting opportunity to take a leadership position in a dynamic manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership and Team Management:

  • Lead and mentor a team of assembly engineers and technicians, providing technical guidance and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Develop and oversee assembly processes for new and existing products, ensuring they meet cost, quality, and time requirements.
  • Manage and prioritize engineering projects to ensure timely delivery of product development and production goals.
  • Drive team development through coaching, training, and performance evaluations to enhance the team's skills and capabilities.

Process Optimization and Efficiency:

  • Lead efforts to streamline and optimize mechanical assembly systems, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and minimize cycle times.
  • Implement advanced manufacturing technologies, automation, and lean manufacturing principles to drive process improvements.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis of current assembly processes and develop strategies for improvement.

Quality Assurance and Compliance:

  • Ensure all assembled products meet or exceed industry standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., ISO, ASTM, FAA).
  • Develop and enforce robust quality control systems, processes, and inspections to prevent defects and ensure consistency in assembly.
  • Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for quality issues, minimizing the impact of defects on production timelines.

Cross-Functional Collaboration:

  • Work closely with design engineers, procurement teams, and manufacturing to ensure successful integration of components and systems.
  • Collaborate with production teams to ensure assembly processes are properly aligned with overall production schedules and goals.
  • Facilitate cross-departmental design reviews and product development meetings to ensure successful project execution.

Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving:

  • Lead troubleshooting efforts to resolve complex assembly issues, utilizing advanced technical expertise to identify root causes and implement effective solutions.
  • Develop and implement solutions for recurring assembly challenges and ensure corrective actions are documented and followed.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement:

  • Continuously research and implement new assembly techniques, tools, and technologies that align with industry trends and improve efficiency.
  • Lead and manage continuous improvement initiatives, promoting innovation within the assembly process.
  • Promote and integrate cutting-edge technologies such as automation, robotics, and AI where applicable.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Create, update, and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including work instructions, procedures, and design specifications.
  • Prepare and present progress reports, technical findings, and recommendations to senior management and stakeholders.
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of assembly process documentation and ensure its compliance with industry standards.

Key Focus Areas:

Assembly System Leadership:

  • Take ownership of the assembly system design and optimization, ensuring the systems deliver maximum throughput and quality while minimizing downtime and errors.
  • Spearhead the transition of assembly processes from development to full-scale production.

Advanced Quality Control:

  • Champion the implementation of advanced quality control measures across the entire assembly process to reduce variation and improve product reliability.
  • Ensure that all engineering and manufacturing teams follow standardized quality practices to meet customer expectations.

Process Innovation and Automation:

  • Lead the integration of innovative technologies, including automation and robotics, into the assembly process to drive productivity and efficiency.
  • Research and implement cutting-edge automation solutions, ensuring the assembly processes are optimized for modern manufacturing techniques.

Risk Management and Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory and safety standards (ISO, ASTM, FAA, etc.) and take responsibility for mitigating risks associated with the assembly processes.
  • Lead the development and enforcement of safety protocols within the assembly department.

Strategic Leadership in Product Development:

  • Take a lead role in design for manufacturability (DFM) and assembly for manufacturability (AFM) to ensure ease of production, cost-effectiveness, and optimal performance of mechanical components.
  • Support cross-functional teams in product design and prototyping, providing engineering insights and feedback to ensure the successful realization of designs.

Qualifications and Skills:

Educational Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
  • 5-10 years of experience in mechanical assembly engineering, preferably in a leadership or senior engineering role in a manufacturing or production environment.

Technical Skills:

  • Extensive experience with assembly processes, mechanical systems, and manufacturing techniques.
  • Strong proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and 3D modeling tools for design review and assembly integration.
  • Deep understanding of advanced manufacturing technologies, including automation, robotics, lean manufacturing, and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Expertise in quality control systems, such as statistical process control (SPC), and failure analysis methods.

Soft Skills:

  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide a team to meet engineering goals.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical abilities with a focus on root cause analysis and process optimization.
  • Outstanding communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and lead teams through complex challenges and projects.

Certifications (Optional but Beneficial):

  • Six Sigma Black Belt or Lean Manufacturing certification.
  • Certification in CAD software (e.g., Certified SolidWorks Professional).
  • Certifications in project management (e.g., PMP) or process improvement (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma).
