The Senior-Level Apprentice Boiler Technician / Helper is a highly experienced support technician who assists in complex maintenance and operations of industrial boiler systems. This role bridges the gap between apprentice and certified boiler technician by handling semi-skilled mechanical tasks, leading helper teams, and ensuring operational readiness of tools, materials, and minor repairs. It is suited for individuals preparing to transition into a fully certified boiler technician role.
Support complex repair tasks such as burner maintenance, pressure part replacement, and valve overhauls.
Independently perform routine boiler inspections and log performance parameters (temperature, pressure, fuel flow, water levels).
Assist in refractory patching, soot blower maintenance, descaling, and feedwater system cleaning.
Supervise junior apprentices/helpers during staging, cleanup, and safety compliance tasks.
Execute basic NDT prep (e.g., surface cleaning, paint removal) and post-test restoration tasks.
Assist with pre- and post-maintenance hydrostatic testing under the guidance of qualified personnel.
Review and interpret work permits, piping schematics, and component location drawings.
Participate in shutdown activities, such as opening manways, removing insulation, and tagging isolation points.
Prepare and maintain detailed checklists, inspection logs, and maintenance reports for supervisory review.
Coordinate safe tool handling, equipment returns, and consumable usage tracking.
Advanced Support in Maintenance Activities
Provide hands-on assistance during complex boiler repairs, inspections, and replacements.
Operational Monitoring & Reporting
Track key operational parameters and flag abnormalities proactively to supervisors.
Supervision of Junior Helpers
Lead and train entry-level helpers in safe work practices, tool use, and housekeeping duties.
Tool & Equipment Readiness
Ensure all mechanical tools, lifting equipment, and consumables are in working condition and job-ready.
Technical Readiness & Progression
Build readiness for transition into certified technician roles by mastering drawings, documentation, and basic troubleshooting.
ITI or Diploma in Mechanical, Fitter, Boilermaker, or related trades
4–6 years of experience in industrial boiler maintenance, shutdown work, or utility plant operations
Familiarity with fire-tube or water-tube boiler systems, valves, burner assemblies, and basic welding safety
Ability to read technical drawings, piping isometrics, and operation manuals
Experience working under boiler safety protocols (PPE, LOTO, confined space, hot work)
Basic Boiler Operation Certificate (if regionally required)
Hot Work, Confined Space, and LOTO Safety Training
Safety Awareness – Scaffolding, Rigging (preferred)
Forklift or Material Handling Certification (optional)
Intermediate mechanical troubleshooting and technical aptitude
Strong teamwork, communication, and basic documentation/reporting skills
