The Apprentice Boiler Technician / Helper is responsible for supporting boiler operations and maintenance activities under the guidance of senior technicians. This entry-level role focuses on hands-on learning, safety practices, tool handling, and assisting with boiler startup, shutdown, inspections, and minor repairs. The position is designed to develop skills and knowledge in boiler mechanics, steam generation systems, and regulatory compliance.
Assist in routine inspections of boilers, burners, valves, pumps, and steam lines.
Support boiler startup and shutdown procedures under supervision.
Help clean boiler tubes, pressure parts, filters, strainers, and mechanical components.
Assist in preparing and staging tools, gaskets, materials, and ladders for maintenance tasks.
Learn to read gauges, temperature/pressure indicators, and water level controls.
Follow lockout/tagout procedures and safety protocols while working near hot surfaces and pressurized systems.
Participate in preventive maintenance tasks like greasing, tightening, and checking for leaks.
Maintain cleanliness and organization in the boiler house, maintenance workshop, and storage areas.
Report any observed irregularities, leaks, or safety hazards to supervisors.
Attend on-the-job training sessions, toolbox talks, and safety briefings.
Foundational Learning
Develop basic understanding of boiler systems, including steam drums, economizers, burners, and water treatment.
Safety Compliance
Learn and adhere to plant safety rules, PPE usage, confined space protocols, and boiler-specific safety practices.
Tool & Equipment Handling
Gain experience with hand tools, pipe wrenches, grinders, and test instruments used in boiler work.
Support Tasks & Housekeeping
Assist skilled technicians during inspections and repairs, and ensure job sites are clean and safe.
Team-Based Assistance
Provide general support to the mechanical maintenance or boiler operations team during shutdowns or emergencies.
High school diploma / ITI / technical training in Mechanical, Fitter, or Boilermaker trades
0–1 year of experience in industrial maintenance, mechanical support, or trade apprenticeship
Willingness to work in hot, noisy, and industrial environments with rotating shifts
Basic understanding of tools, equipment, and mechanical systems is preferred
Strong work ethic, physical fitness, and eagerness to learn
Basic mechanical aptitude and interest in boiler systems
Good communication and team collaboration skills
Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
