Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

The Project Manager – Shipboard Mechanical Systems oversees the planning, coordination, and execution of projects involving the installation, modification, and maintenance of mechanical systems on vessels. This includes responsibility for systems such as piping, HVAC, pumps, and especially valve systems, ensuring full compliance with marine regulations, class requirements, and project specifications. The role requires managing cross-functional teams and subcontractors while maintaining control over budget, schedule, and quality.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Lead project execution for mechanical systems across commercial or naval vessels, including valve assemblies, piping networks, steam, fuel, bilge, ballast, and HVAC systems.

    • Develop and manage project schedules, work breakdown structures, resource allocations, and procurement plans.

    • Coordinate with engineering teams to interpret mechanical design packages, P&IDs, system layouts, and valve schedules.

    • Ensure installation and integration of valve systems (manual, control, safety, pressure relief) is done per class and OEM specs.

    • Conduct shipboard inspections, system walkdowns, and technical interface meetings during system installation and commissioning.

    • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, regulatory bodies (USCG, ABS, DNV), and classification societies on system compliance.

    • Manage risk assessments, change orders, cost control, and documentation throughout the project lifecycle.

    • Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), harbor and sea trials, and system turnover protocols.

    • Oversee safety, QA/QC compliance, and enforce LOTO and confined space safety protocols during mechanical work.

    • Maintain project documentation including test plans, commissioning reports, and valve calibration and maintenance records.

Key Focus Areas:

    • Valve and System Integration: Oversight of manual and automated valve systems within shipboard mechanical networks.

    • Marine Systems Execution: Deliver project objectives for steam, water, air, fuel, and waste systems aboard operational vessels or during shipyard periods.

    • Stakeholder Coordination: Manage internal teams and interface with shipowners, classification societies, and OEM vendors.

    • Project Controls: Drive execution aligned with schedule, budget, and technical scope through structured project management.

Qualifications & Experience:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or related technical discipline (or equivalent field experience).

    • 5–10 years of experience managing shipboard or shipyard projects, especially in mechanical systems and valve applications.

    • Strong understanding of marine piping systems, valves (gate, globe, butterfly, safety, solenoid), and their shipboard applications.

    • Familiarity with marine standards and codes: USCG, ABS, ASME B31.1/B31.3, IMO, and vessel-specific requirements.

    • Proficiency in project management tools (MS Project, Primavera), engineering drawings, and documentation control systems.

Preferred Certifications:

    • PMP® Certification or equivalent.

    • Offshore or shipboard safety certifications (e.g., STCW, OSHA 30, BOSIET).

    • Experience with 3D modeling or piping software (e.g., AutoCAD Plant 3D, AVEVA, ShipConstructor).
