CAD Drafter – Marine Mechanical/Valve Layouts

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly experienced and detail-driven Senior CAD Drafter to lead drafting activities for complex marine mechanical systems with a focus on valve layout, piping integration, and equipment arrangements. This role is central to supporting engineering design efforts for shipboard systems, ensuring drawing quality, layout feasibility, and compliance with marine industry standards. The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of mechanical drafting, valve assemblies, and ship integration requirements, as well as the ability to mentor junior drafters and interface across disciplines.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Complex Mechanical & Valve Layout Drafting: Lead the development of detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings for mechanical and fluid systems, including piping, valves, and structural supports for shipboard environments.

  • Technical Oversight: Review and approve drawings for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company and marine industry standards.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, designers, and production teams to resolve interface conflicts and validate spatial layouts.

  • Marine Standards & Classification Compliance: Ensure all drawings align with ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register, and other relevant maritime codes and regulatory standards.

  • Mentorship & Leadership: Train, guide, and supervise junior and mid-level drafters to maintain drafting consistency, quality, and efficiency.

  • Document Control & Drawing Management: Maintain proper version control and drawing records within PDM/PLM systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and lead production of highly detailed valve arrangement, piping layout, and mechanical integration drawings for marine vessels.

  • Oversee the creation of general arrangements, isometrics, spool drawings, and BOMs.

  • Interpret engineering markups, design specifications, and P&IDs to ensure accurate drawing execution.

  • Conduct clash detection and resolve space allocation issues between mechanical and structural systems.

  • Support ship checks, field verification, and development of as-built documentation.

  • Manage drawing packages for design reviews, client submissions, and regulatory approvals.

  • Contribute to drafting process improvements and development of internal standards.

  • Serve as the go-to technical resource for CAD and marine layout-related questions within the design team.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree, technical diploma, or certification in Drafting, CAD Design, or a related field.

  • 6+ years of experience in CAD drafting, with a focus on marine mechanical systems, piping, and valve layouts.

  • Expert-level proficiency in AutoCAD and strong experience with 3D modeling tools such as SolidWorks, Inventor, or equivalent.

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical components, valve systems, and shipboard integration practices.

  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.5, ISO, and marine drafting standards.

  • Ability to perform clash detection, spatial analysis, and equipment layout optimization.

  • Strong communication and leadership skills with a collaborative, team-oriented approach.

  • Experience working with PDM/PLM systems for drawing control and lifecycle management.

Preferred:

  • Experience in naval, offshore, or commercial marine engineering projects.

  • Familiarity with piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), system flow diagrams, and 3D model review software (e.g., Navisworks).

  • Background in supporting shipyard production or repair drawings.

  • Ability to lead drawing quality audits and contribute to regulatory submissions.

  • Exposure to digital shipbuilding tools or BIM (Building Information Modeling) in a marine context.
