CAD Drafter – Marine Mechanical/Valve Layouts

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a skilled Mid-Level CAD Drafter with experience in marine mechanical systems and valve layout drafting. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing high-quality 2D and 3D technical drawings to support shipboard mechanical and fluid systems, working collaboratively with engineering teams to ensure accurate design execution and integration.

This position is ideal for someone with a solid foundation in CAD design who can work independently on moderately complex drafting tasks, including piping and valve arrangements, equipment layouts, and ship integration drawings.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Marine Mechanical Drafting: Create detailed mechanical system layouts including piping, valve assemblies, equipment mounting, and space integration within marine environments.

  • 2D and 3D CAD Modeling: Produce accurate 2D drawings and 3D models of valves, piping assemblies, brackets, supports, and mechanical enclosures using AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar software.

  • Design Interpretation & Implementation: Interpret mechanical schematics, P&IDs, and engineering sketches to develop production-ready drawings.

  • Drawing Revisions & Updates: Execute redlines and change requests based on engineering feedback and project updates.

  • Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, senior drafters, and production teams to coordinate layouts and resolve interface issues.

  • Standards Compliance: Ensure adherence to company drafting standards, marine classification rules (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s), and applicable technical codes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare detailed mechanical and valve layout drawings for shipboard systems and fluid handling equipment.

  • Update and maintain general arrangement (GA) drawings, isometric piping layouts, and bill of materials (BOMs).

  • Ensure proper application of dimensioning, tolerances, symbols, and materials callouts per ASME/ANSI standards.

  • Collaborate with the design and engineering team to ensure layout accuracy and manufacturability.

  • Support design reviews with drawing packages, section views, and installation diagrams.

  • Maintain drawing databases, file organization, and configuration control through PDM or PLM systems.

  • Identify and escalate design conflicts or spatial integration issues.

  • Participate in field surveys or ship checks to verify system fit-up and as-built conditions.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree, technical diploma, or certification in Drafting, CAD Technology, or a related field.

  • 3–5 years of experience in CAD drafting, preferably in marine, shipbuilding, or mechanical system environments.

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and 3D modeling tools (e.g., SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar).

  • Working knowledge of mechanical systems, fluid flow components, and valve types.

  • Familiarity with marine system drawings, pipe routing, and structural interfaces.

  • Understanding of drafting standards (ASME Y14.5, ISO, or equivalent).

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple drafting assignments.

  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams.

Preferred:

  • Experience with shipboard piping or valve layout for military, commercial, or offshore vessels.

  • Exposure to classification society standards (ABS, DNV, Lloyd’s Register).

  • Familiarity with P&ID, PFD, and systems integration diagrams.

  • Experience using a Product Data Management (PDM) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.

  • Ability to mentor junior drafters or assist in quality control of drawing sets.
