CAD Drafter – Marine Mechanical/Valve Layouts

Job Description

Roles & Responsibilities

We are seeking a detail-oriented and motivated Junior CAD Drafter to assist in preparing mechanical and valve layout drawings for marine systems. The ideal candidate will support engineers and senior designers in creating 2D and 3D CAD models, updating technical documentation, and ensuring drawing accuracy in support of shipboard mechanical and fluid system projects.

This role is ideal for someone starting their career in marine design with an interest in mechanical systems, fluid control layouts, and ship integration.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Mechanical & Valve Layout Drafting: Prepare and revise mechanical system drawings, including valve arrangements, piping routes, and equipment placement for marine vessels.

  • CAD Modeling & Detailing: Assist in generating accurate 2D and 3D CAD models using industry-standard software under the supervision of senior designers or engineers.

  • Drawing Compliance & Standards: Ensure that all drawings adhere to internal drafting standards and marine industry guidelines.

  • Drawing Revisions & Updates: Implement redlines and engineering change notices (ECNs) quickly and accurately.

  • Collaboration with Engineers: Work closely with mechanical and piping engineers to understand design intent and ensure proper layout of mechanical components.

  • Documentation Control: Support document control processes by organizing and maintaining drawing records and revision histories.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop detailed valve and mechanical layout drawings for shipboard applications.

  • Assist in creating and updating general arrangement (GA) and detailed part drawings.

  • Apply correct dimensioning, tolerances, and annotation practices.

  • Support design reviews by preparing drawing packages and technical illustrations.

  • Maintain drawing files and associated technical documentation in a PDM/PLM system.

  • Incorporate markups and corrections from senior designers and engineers.

  • Coordinate with multi-disciplinary teams for interface alignment and drawing consistency.

Qualifications:

  • Associate’s degree, technical diploma, or certificate in Drafting, CAD Technology, or a related field.

  • 0–2 years of experience in a CAD drafting role (internship or co-op experience acceptable).

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar CAD software; familiarity with 3D modeling a plus.

  • Basic understanding of mechanical components, piping layouts, and valve types.

  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.

  • Willingness to learn marine industry standards and practices.

  • Good communication and teamwork skills.

  • Familiarity with marine or mechanical systems is a plus.

Preferred:

  • Exposure to marine vessel design, shipbuilding, or offshore systems.

  • Experience working within a Product Data Management (PDM) system.

  • Knowledge of drafting standards such as ANSI/ASME Y14.5 (GD&T).

  • Ability to interpret mechanical schematics and P&IDs.
